Happy 4th Birthday, Little Man

It seems that time passes by so quickly, and it isn't until Cash's birthday approaches each year that I realize the full extent of that. I cannot believe it has been FOUR years since I had that cute little guy. FOUR years since my life flipped upside down.
In four years, the pain hasn't left- but it has lessened.

In the past four years I have made peace with my decision, learned from my mistakes, and realized that I can't hold onto things I have no control over. Things are not ideal, and I wish that I had more involvement in Cash's life than I presently do. But I don't, and I can't be angry about that.

Whether he is physically a part of my life or not, he is always part of it nonetheless.
Four years later, I still think of him every day. No amount of time will ever change that.
So as hard as it is, I'm sending all of my love to him today as I always do.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CASH. I WILL FOREVER LOVE YOU.

20 years older and (hopefully) wiser too

well, today marks my 20th birthday... i feel a whole lot older than that though ! i've been thinking today about the things i have learned throughout my 20 years of life, and i want to share some of it with you. none of this is rocket science, but this blog is my only way to expressing how i feel at this point in my life. so here comes the list ;

i've learned ... that life is short and can be taken away in an instant. say "i love you"- because you never know when it might be the last time.

i've learned that one decision can change the entire course of your life.

i've learned ... a choice that seems so insignificant at the time can give you heartache for life, and bring heartache to others as well.

i've learned ... nothing and no one should ever come between best friends. and that it doesn't matter where your best friend lives, or how often you talk to each other- you'll always be best friends.

i've learned ... you can't help who you fall in love with, sometimes you just do. don't fight it.

i've learned that no matter how many times people say "no regrets"- we all know thats not really true. we all live with a regret hiding somewhere.

i've learned ... age doesn't determine maturity, its the experiences you face and how you deal with those experiences that determines maturity.

i've learned ... nothing makes me happier than spending time with family, and i look forward to the day i start one of my own.

i've learned ... that there really is no greater love than a mother's for her child. i am eternally grateful for the opportunity i've already had to experience that for myself.

i've learned ... sometimes its OK to cry and feel sorry for yourself, as long as you're there to pull yourself back up again when the time comes.

& most importantly....

i've learned how crazy, scary, challenging, and exciting life is... & that it all happens the way it's supposed to.

I've done some pretty crazy, scary, challenging and exciting things in my twenty years of life. And even though I'm not proud of it all, I wouldn't change a thing. I met the most amazing people along the way, including my favorite little man and his family. How blessed am I ?! Here's to many more years of mistakes, memories, and happiness.

christmas.

This years Christmas was certainly different from any other year, but I guess that's just a part of growing up. All of my siblings are 27+, and I have 3 nephews and 3 nieces under 6. As it turns out, Christmas is not centered around me and I finally realized that this year ! haha. We spent Christmas Eve together as a family last night, as we always do, and opened up all presents under the tree. Then this morning we went to my brothers house in Magrath for church and spent the rest of the day there. I think that was the weirdest part for me, not being at home for Christmas. My sister and her family decided to spend the day at home, much to my disgust... I love her kids SO much and was disappointed that I wasn't going to be able to see them. But thats life.

I was super excited to give my nieces and nephews their presents last night, and I also finally realized how much more enjoyable it is to give than to receive. I could care less about opening my presents, I just wanted to see the kids faces when they opened theirs.
My FAVORITE gift to give, however, was to those who I unfortunately would not be able to see. I was being crafty this year and decided to continue on my tradition of Christmas Ornaments for Cash's family by making one! I am extremely OCD about things and am a perfectionist, so I was really stressed out about making something, but it actually turned out well and I was happy with the end result. As always with Cash's presents, there is one for myself one as well.

I also happened to come across this picture frame a few months ago, and I thought it was PERFECT. D&Y don't have any photos of the placement, and even though this one isn't focussed I was so happy to have any at all. I hope Y will really cherish it, and hang it in Cash's room so he can see this special moment for himself every day.

On the back of the frame I put a copy of "From Gods Arms to My Arms to Yours". I thought it was really fitting for the frame, and just so happens that thats what my blog is named after !

Last years Christmas I posted a poem, it was aimed towards a birthmother's first Christmas since her child was born, but excerpts of that poem are still true for me now, on Cash's second Christmas. I think the poem is perfect, so I'm going to use it again....

Knowing her decision
Was one for the best
She lights a candle in memory
Then sits down to rest.

The wick of the candle
flickers with light
The wind outside is howling
She finds little comfort on this lonely night

She takes out an album
And gently dusts off the cover
It is all she has left
To feel like a mother.

She treasures each photo
of her little one
They are her only ties
To her precious son.

Silently a tear
Slips down her cheek
She wipes it away quickly
So she doesn't appear weak.

Christmas will never
be the same again
She will always be thinking
of her little man.

She knows through her pain
For him this was right
But her unselfless deed
Gives little comfort that night.

Her arms are still empty
Her heart is still breaking
He is with somebody else
And she is left aching.

I got to cuddle my darling little niece all day, and that definitely is therapeutic for me. My arms ache to hold Cash as a baby again, and taking care of her eases the pain I still feel naturally after the "loss" of Cash. Its difficult to explain, but holding Brylee takes some of the ache away. And it helps that she is such a sweetheart !

Her heart sits on each page
Of that dusty book
In his eyes, his little face
The way that he looks.

She can't hide her pain
She can't hide her tears
This is the first of many
Long, painful years

It is true that my Christmases will never be the same, and each year I know I will feel an emptiness in my heart and that longing to have Cash with me. I see all his cousins playing together, and I wish that he could be in there with them too. I definitely feel like there is something missing when we are all together. I know without a doubt that he was excessively spoiled this year with presents, and that he gets more than enough love from his adoptive family. I hope he also feel's of his biological family's love for him too, mine and Curtis's.
I am accepting the fact that each year for Christmas I might get sad that Cash is not with me. I made a choice 18 months ago, and this is a small consequence of that choice.

But the light that she sees
At the end of all this
Is the smile on his face
He is truly blessed

With that thought
She slowly readies for bed
To sleep all night
Dreams of him in her head

She slowly lays down
And heads off to sleep
Knowing his memory
She will always keep.

Merry Christmas, everyone. And especially to my little boy & his family. I love you all.

18 months

I can't believe 18 months have passed since I gave birth to my dear boy. So tiny and perfect, he is quickly growing into a handsome little man. A year ago, these milestones would have affected me more than they do now, when the pain was fresher, deeper. While tears still slowly fall down my cheeks as I type tonight, I know that all will be okay. God did not send us here to struggle, he sent us here to learn and to grow. And that is exactly what Cash and I both are doing.

" Oh I believe there are angels among us
Sent down to us from somewhere up above
They come to you and me in our darkest hours
To show us how to live
To teach us how to give
To guide us with a light of love "

Happy 18 months of life to my little angel

things i'll never say

I have debated this thought for a few weeks now. It pains me to say so, but this might be my last post for awhile... My heart is just not into it anymore. It feels more like an obligation than a passion like it used to. There are so many things I want to say, and so many things I still need to share, but for some reason the words just won't come to me. There are about 20 half-completed posts with that taunting draft next to it. I just cannot bring myself to finish them and I don't know why. My last few posts especially should have been extremely hearfelt, and it dissapoints me that they were not. I think I have cried all my emotion out this past year and I find myself being mentally exhausted right now. I'm very numb. Thats the best word for it.
I've found myself coming to a crossroad- do I force a post, not feeling happy with the way it comes out, or do I quit writing until I am ready to mean everything I say? I want to post about the happy things going in my life too, but feel obligated to only write the sad things and I just don't want to do that anymore. I've debated deleting my blog all together. Some would say it hurts to think about the hurt. I agree with that, but I also disagree. When I first started blogging  in October, it was the best decision I could have made at that time. The emotions were so raw, memories so fresh in my mind, and writing helped me process my thoughts and make sense of it all. My blog has served its purpose.. To help others gather information, and to help me grieve my loss. My posts will still be here to read, I just have to go MIA for a little while to prepare for the posts that are still waiting for me to finish.
It has been a year since I placed Cash, and I feel I used that time to heal to the best of my ability. It still hurts incredibly, and I know it always will. Recent events in my life have caused me to realize that I will be OK. I don't want to say that I am moving on, but I feel that maybe it is okay to start to. I need this time now to take a break from thinking about the hurt and focus on making myself even stronger. I'm happy, and for the first time in a long time, I can say that honestly. My life has been absolutely busy and fun lately, and will continue that way for awhile. I'm welcoming that excitement with open arms.

still waiting

new look

New look for a New year! Thanks to the Graphics Fairy, I got a new background for this year. I have found that it is really difficult to post about adoption every day, so this year I will be changing it up a teeny tiny bit while still keeping my main focus on adoption and of course, Cash. But lately I have come to the realization that dwelling on something doesn't make room for advancement. I try to make my blog as real as possible, but when I get close to those tender feelings I have, sometimes it puts my mood on a depressing note. I am concerned that trying to post every day about something related won't allow me to move forward with my life and think only of the positive things. Once in awhile the sad things are good to talk about of course, and I won't quit posting if something sad comes up! I'd like to continue blogging as much as possible, so once in awhile there will be posts non-related to adoption. I think thats okay though! It will show girls who are maybe going through a tough spot that no matter how difficult at the time something may be, life will always go on. I have some fun blog entries coming up in the next little while so keep your eyes open!

guest story!

I got this email from a fellow birthmother and I was so excited when she said I could share it with you all. I love hearing about other birthmother's experiences. Each and every story from someone who has been involved in adoption is amazing, and this one is no different. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did !

"Everyone’s story is different, even when we go through the same sorts of things... My story didn’t start eight years ago but it didn’t end there either.  My story probably starts in grade school.  I was not a popular girl and I was picked on and spit on and bullied my whole school life.  In grade 12 I moved, ran away from my school problems and found a better group a friends.  I dated my first boyfriend, although I don’t think I liked him but liked the fact that he liked me.  It didn’t last long.
After school, I went to college.  One day, walking down the halls with my roommate, we past a really attractive guy.  He said something I thought was nice and my roommate thought was flirting and I was hooked.  I didn’t know who he was, but he was nice to me and he was attractive.  Later on during the school year we met and started hanging out.  He wasn’t a member of my church and didn’t believe in God at all.  He didn’t have a lot of moral standing or have a lot of the qualities I wanted in a husband but he thought I was attractive and no one had ever said that before.  My parents were always trying to get me to be better and do something different and it’s probably because they could see the direction in which I was heading and wanted to help.  But I didn’t see it as help or love, I saw it as attacking.  I got into trouble as always happens in these stories and then I assumed that the Lord no longer loved me because I had sinned.  No one else seemed to love me or care for me so why would He?  The only person who did was a guy who wouldn’t even date me exclusively, but that is all I thought I was worth.

I got pregnant and the first suggestion from this guy was to get an abortion.  I was offended but looking back, it makes sense that if a person didn’t believe in God, they wouldn’t see abortion as wrong either.  Luckily, I remembered enough of what I had been taught as a child and could never abort a child.  His next idea was adoption.  We weren’t going to be married, that wasn’t the direction our relationship was going, although I thought I loved him.  He didn’t have a steady job and wanted to be a magician and free, not tied down to a kid with some girl he was just having fun times with.  So, I looked into adoption and single parenting.  I had some really good friends to help me along the way and one told me time and time again that if I wanted to single parent, I could come live with her and her soon-to-be husband once they were married and they would help support me and my baby.  I loved the support but I knew that adoption was the best thing for this child and that is the direction I went in.  I know it is not the same for all young, unmarried mother’s but that was the best thing for my baby.  I found a good family and met them a few times.  When I first saw their pictures, I knew that was where my child belonged- they were her family!

At the end of our relationship, this guy I was dating decided that he wanted to change things up.  Three weeks before I was due, he came to me and said that he wanted his brother and sister-in-law adopt our daughter and then he could see her whenever he wanted but he wouldn’t have to parent her.  He told me he was going to take me to court over her.  I was pretty worried and went into the hospital that night, bleeding due to stress.  This was where things changed.  I asked my dad for a blessing and in it I was told that I had to fight for this child because she couldn’t fight for herself.  Three weeks later, I went into the hospital with my mom as my support and had a beautiful baby girl. Five days after that he took me to court and I fought for my daughter and what I knew was right.  I knew she was part of someone else’s family and I knew that was the will of the Lord.  So many people were behind me, praying for the baby and I and it did work our way.  Before the end of the day, my daughter was with her family and I have only seen her once since.  I have gotten pictures and letters of her for the last eight years and now my openness agreement has come to its end.  We have written about it and her parents feel that continuing should be her decision and so I will see if I hear anything else.

Was this hard? Yes. It was the hardest thing I did in my life, but one of the best things I did, too.
Is it still hard? Yes.  But life is different now looking back.
Do I regret my experience?  No, I was able to make something good out of something that wasn’t and I was able to bring a beautiful daughter of God into the world for someone who couldn’t do it for themselves.
I learned a lot from my experience and as I fought for her, I learned to fight for myself.  I learned that I am important, to the Lord and to myself and that is all that matters!  There were still times where Satan tested this new resolve to love myself and there are times when he still does but I am winning more and more.
I learned that I wanted to date a young man who would treat me well and who loved me, and I did.  I made myself a list of things I wanted in a husband and when I got married a few years ago, my husband had so many good qualities.  He treats me the way I should be treated.  Does he know about my past? Yes, but he doesn’t truly understand it.  It’s hard for people who haven’t been through something like that to understand.  I never gave her to her family because it would be a good decision for me, I only thought of her.
Since this, I have gone to school in the field of those who worked with me and helped me so that I can do the same for someone else.
I don’t have any children yet but I plan on it.

There are always hard times, but things seem to get better.  Like a war wound the scab heals and becomes a scar and doesn’t bleed anymore.  But also like a war wound, there are good days and bad days.  There are days that the old war wound really hurts and I pull out my pictures and letter and cry.  There was the time I help my first nephew for the first time and just cried for a little while.  I wouldn’t hold babies at all until he came but he helped me heal that wound. But those bad days are getting further apart with a lot more good days in between.  There are days when you wouldn’t even notice my war limp and there are days where people look at me and I can tell they are seeing the limp and wondering where it is from.  Even people who know what the limp and wound are from still don’t understand.  Some of my siblings were angry with me for a long time because I took their niece away.  Others have used this to change their lives and do things differently.  I even have one sibling that wants to adopt now.
Every story is different and every girl decides her ending differently.  For me, I chose to keep my daughter to myself- not a secret but something that I don’t share because she is too personal and others don’t understand.
The last time I took out my pictures and letters there weren’t any tears.  There is always sadness but there is hope, too.  Hope for her and hope for me.  Hope that her life will turn out better with her family than it would with me and hope that she will have a great self-esteem and not get into the problems I did.  Hope that I will have my own children and be able to raise them and love them as much as I love her.

Hope guides me. It is what gets me through the day and especially the night. The hope that after you're gone from my sight it will not be the last time I look upon you.” A Knights Tale

mistakes becoming miracles.

This might be a little confusing, but I had a lot of thoughts on my mind. And although what I say in this post relates to my past, it is also for everyone who’s ever made a mistake. For everyone who’s been angry with someone over something they’ve done. Or maybe someone who’s angry with themselves for hurting someone else. Whatever it is in your life you are struggling with, I hope this post can help you see the bright side of it.

My mom commented on a previous post of mine, "If we can learn from our [mistakes and] experiences, they aren't mistakes at all." How true this is! Never let a decision from the past ruin your life, but take a lesson from the past to start a new life and make your future the best you can. It doesn’t matter who you are- every person on this earth has made a mistake at some point in their life. And if you think you haven’t- well there’s your mistake right there. Everybody has a past.  But why let your past define you? It’s what you do in your future that counts.

When something bad happens, you have three choices: you can let it destroy you, define you, or strengthen you.

I have found that when some people go through a less than desirable experience, they use it as an excuse. They use it as a crutch to all their other problems, and when something bad happens again, they blame it on the first experience. This is allowing the hurt to destroy and define you. I did NOT want to be remembered just as "the girl who got knocked up" in highschool. I could have let my whole world crash down around me. I could have allowed it to get the best of me, and I could have just given up right there. But after a lot of praying and thinking I realized this- anyone can give up, it’s the easiest thing in the world. But to hold it together when everyone else would understand if you fell apart? That’s true strength.

Strength doesn’t come from winning. Strength comes when you lose, and go through struggles.

The strongest people I know aren't physically strong.. The strongest people I know are the ones who were able to pull through seemingly impossible trials in their lives and still manage to smile. They are the women who have buried children, just days old. The women who, against all odds, have overcame cancer. The women who's husbands abandoned them and their families. The women who have been abused, yet are still able to trust. They are the women I admire, and strive every day to be like. I am positive that these women have had multiple times where they felt like throwing their hands up in the air and being done with it all. Everyone goes through their highs and lows, and we all feel useless and upset with our lives at one point or another. We all feel like giving up sometimes.

When you reach the point where you want to give up, look behind and see how far you have already came.

What would be the point of going through hell and back, only to throw it all away when things were looking up? What would be the point of giving up then? Was hiding out in my room going to change the fact that I was pregnant? NO, it wouldn’t! I didn’t want to just give up- I had a new life to take care of, and I wanted to make that baby proud. I had already come so far from where I was- and although it was extremely difficult at times, I decided that no matter what, I was going to keep my head held high. I was going to stay positive.

Our choices rule our destiny. What happened yesterday we cannot change, but what happens now and what will happen tomorrow is always in our hands. Life will happen the way
 we choose it to happen.

People make mistakes, things go wrong, just remember
 life goes on.

We all make mistakes. Everyone on this earth has made mistakes. Recognizing that, and acting on it to make things better is the first step to moving on. I knew I had made a mistake.. I knew I had made many. I directly hurt someone really close to me, and I was hurting my family and everyone else who cared about me. I felt so much shame and hurt for these people I was hurting. It was eating me alive- I felt guilt, sadness, and anger. I felt embarrassed when I was in public, not because I was pregnant, but because of the pain I was causing people I loved. I don't know what did it, but one day I just woke up and realized I had to let that all go. I had to forgive myself for the mistakes I made, so that I could move on. I didn't want to feel this way, because I knew I wouldn't be able to move forward with my life.

When you dwell on the past, the past dwells on you.

The whole purpose of forgiveness is to allow yourself the permission to move on without the hurt. Often times individuals are more than willing to forgive others- but not so willing to forgive themselves. As human beings, it is our natural tendency to beat ourselves up over things we do wrong, and hardly acknowledge the things we do right. By forgiving yourself of a past transgression or mistake, you are allowing yourself to move forward, and past that negative event in your life. However, forgiving yourself will not cause those feelings to disappear completely. The memory lasts as a reminder not to repeat the mistake, and allow the hurt back in.

The past can hurt, but you either run from it or learn from it.

“You can’t erase the past, you can’t even change it.
But that doesn’t mean life doesn’t offer you
the opportunity to make it right.”

As much as I wanted to, I couldn’t erase the fact that I was pregnant. I couldn’t change the fact that I was pregnant. But life handed me the opportunity to choose a great life for my child and make it right. From day one, I knew I couldn’t support a child, and I didn’t want him to suffer because of my mistake. People may disagree, but to me adoption was the way I could make something good out of something bad. I looked at this trial as a blessing for another family- and never as a burden to my own.

It turns out, sometimes you have to do the wrong thing. Sometimes your have to make a big mistake, to figure out how to make things right. Mistakes are painful, but they’re really the only way to find out who you really are.

Trials are Gods way of showing us that he trusts us enough to know that we can get through whatever life is throwing at us.

I had always looked at Cash as being a “gift” of sorts- My Heavenly Father needed to give me a firm smack to smarten up, and someone else needed a child. I definitely believe that if He didn’t think I could handle it, He wouldn’t have trusted me with that big of a thing. It made me feel better knowing I had His help in all I do too. Cash was my wake-up call, and from that moment on I made a conscious effort to change my life around.

“You’ll never leave where you are without first
 deciding where you’d rather be.”

When you set a goal in life, sometimes you always don't have a plan to get there. You just know its something you want to achieve, and will do what it takes to get it. A year ago, I was on a path I didn’t even think about where it was leading to. But when I thought about that baby boy, I realized where I wanted to end up, and I left that life behind. Today, I am on my way to being the kind of person I wish I had always been. I don’t want to sound all self-righteous or anything, so I wont. But I learnt so much through this experience and cocky or not, I know that I am a better person because of it. I am neither proud of nor happy with the girl I used to be.

No smile is more beautiful than one
that’s smiled through the tears.

Honestly, before last year I hated myself and everything about me. I was never happy, and I was upset with the things I was doing yet didn’t have the confidence to step up for myself and quit it all. But this trial showed me how to love myself, especially when everyone else didn’t. Its odd- but feeling alone didn’t necessarily bother me.. I learnt to be comfortable with my own skin, even if it was 50 pounds heavier!

Every story has an end, but in life every
end is just a new beginning.

I have this quote at the bottom of my blog for a reason. At one point, almost everything comes to some sort of an end. People pass away, relationships end, friendships are lost… the list goes on and on. But Life doesn’t end when someone dies, break-ups happen so that you can find the right person, and friendships end to make way for new people to come into your life. The same goes for trials and hardships. You can look at a death or break-up as an ending, or you can look at it as a start to something new. The trials we face may seem horrible at the time, but when all is said and done, it is just the start to the next chapter in our lives. Don’t give up and close the book just because things get bad.
There is always something brighter on the next page, just waiting to be read.

eventful week.

There will be many posts over the next few days as this week marks the anniversary for a lot of important events in my life. The most important events so far actually..  (and i got a new macbook so blogs are easier to post haha :) ) I gave birth to my son 4 months ago today. Its crazy to think that it was that long ago, let alone that it even happened. It all seems like it was just a dream. And then I see the pictures and feel the longing in my heart and I realize it was just 4 short months ago. Usually these days are very difficult for me, but today I am feeling very blessed. Cash changed so many lives, for the better. His father and I would not be the people we are today if it wasn't for him. He caused me to open my eyes and view the world around me in a  completely different light. I love that little boy with all of my heart, and even though he is not with me, I cannot imagine life without him. I owe all of my growth this past year to him. Having a baby at 17 was certainly not planned, nor was it a happy surprise. But this quote basically sums it all up:

"Every life has a purpose and every person is in this world for a reason. Never think of your life or anyone else's life as a mistake, for God doesnt make mistakes, but he certainly forgives ours. "
I have never thought of Cash as a mistake. He is my gift from God, and I truly believe that. No, he did not come to Earth in the most favorable of circumstances, but he came at the time when I really needed a wake-up call and he was the answer to my prayers. 4 months ago, my life changed even more drastically than it did when I learnt I was pregnant. 4 months ago, I feel in love with a tiny baby boy who showed me what the true meaning of love was. And still, 4 months later, I feel that same love each time I think of him. I don't believe it will ever go away. People say that Cash is not my son and that I need to "move on", but they are wrong. I chose to carry that baby for 9 months and then give birth to him. He is 100% my child, and I will always be his birthmother. (I do not claim to be his "mom" however. The woman raising him and giving him both of our love is his mom.) The love I feel for Cash will be the same yesterday and 20 years from now. No amount of time can erase that from my heart.  Usually I am an emotional wreck on days like today where I am constantly thinking of him, but today I feel at peace with everything. I was able to bring a healthy child into this world to bless the lives of amazing people who have always dreamt of having a son. I was able to give that boy the gift of having two parents who could give him everything he needed and wanted, where I could not. Right now, I do not have anything to be upset over! Yes, I still feel incredible pain over it, but it is not necessarily sad. A big piece of my heart went with that little boy, but knowing he is being well taken care of eases that pain just a little bit. All I ever wanted was for him to be happy, and I see that he is.
Cash was my little angel with no halo, and today I am grateful for the gift he was in my life.

Other events coming up:
Wednesday, October 20th marks 4 months to the day I placed Cash with his adoptive parents. It was Father's Day, and was beautiful in spite of its sadness and heartbreak. That day each month is also extremely hard for me, but its another one I hold close to my heart.
Saturday marks ONE YEAR since I found out I was pregnant.

HAPPY 4 MONTHS TO MY BEAUTIFUL BABY BOY.
